Beware! and Be Careful: Damage Prone Laundry Items

by Marissa Zumbo August 2024

When it comes to laundry, not all items are created equal. Some can handle the rough and tumble of a washing machine, while others… well, let’s just say they have a more “fragile” constitution. At Big Waves Laundromat, we’ve seen it all—pillows losing their stuffing, stuffed animals coming unstuffed, and bath mats that are all but unrecognizable after a few washes. Here’s a fun (and slightly cautionary) guide to help you extend the life of your delicate items and avoid laundry heartbreak!

Pillows & Pet Beds: A Stuffing Conundrum

Pillows and pet beds are cozy and comfy, but they don’t always hold up well in the wash. The problem? The stuffing. Once wet, it becomes heavy and pulls on the seams, leading to an inevitable unstuffing disaster. To keep your pillows intact, try using pillow protectors and fancy pillowcases so that the actual pillow only needs washing in extreme cases. Trust us—your pillows will thank you!

Stuffed Animals: Handle with Care

Stuffed animals are adorable, but they’re also unpredictable when it comes to durability. Some are built to last, while others… not so much. We’ve seen more than a few beloved teddies lose their stuffing in the wash, so be selective about when you toss them in the machine. Insider tip: If your child’s favorite stuffed friend is looking a bit dingy, hand wash it with a gentle soap like Dr. Bronner’s. It’s a bit more work, but it’ll keep that stuffed animal intact for more cuddles.

Delicate Blankets & Quilts: The Stitching Dilemma

Blankets and quilts with delicate stitching, ribbons, or embellishments are prone to de-stitching in the wash. These intricate details can’t always withstand the rigors of a washing machine, so think twice before tossing them in. When in doubt, consider spot cleaning or hand washing to preserve those beautiful details.

Bath Mats & Rugs: The Rubber Riddle

Bath mats may seem sturdy, but their rubber backing has a limited lifespan in the washing machine. After about five cycles, that rubber starts to peel away, leaving you with a less-than-functional mat. Floor rugs can also suffer in the wash, losing their rigidity and shape. If possible, shake them out or spot clean instead of relying on the machine. To keep your rug fresher for longer, hang it over the shower curtain to dry after each use. This simple step will also help preserve the rubber backing.

Vintage Clothing: Handle with Love

Vintage clothing has character, history, and sometimes fragile fibers. These delicate items may not survive even the gentlest of washing cycles, so take extra care. When you absolutely must wash vintage pieces, use a delicate cycle and cold water, or better yet, hand wash them to keep those precious garments in one piece.

At Big Waves Laundromat, we do our best to care for every item that comes through our doors, but some things are just too delicate for even the most careful wash. Keep these tips in mind to extend the life of your fragile favorites, and remember—we’re always here to help with expert advice and top-notch service!
