Bubble Trouble? How to Wash Smart and Save Big
by Wade Hickok and Marissa Zumbo, September 2024
Let’s chat about bubbles.
We all love watching those fluffy suds dance through the washer window, but when they’re still hanging around at the final spin cycle, it’s not so cute anymore. Too much soap at the end of the wash means extra rinses—and extra costs. But don’t stress! We’ve got some tips to make sure your laundry is done perfectly the first time, so you can save both time and money.
Easy on the Detergent, Champ!
The #1 mistake? People drowning their laundry in detergent. Trust us, your clothes don’t need that much soap! Check your detergent cap—it’s got lines that tell you how much to use for different loads. For example, a full cap is enough for 6-8 loads, so if you’re washing 4 loads, only fill it to the 4-load line. A little goes a long way!
Go Big with Extended Cycles
Got some seriously dirty clothes? Instead of doubling down on detergent, pick an extended cycle like “Ultra Wash” or “Deep Clean.” These add-ons give your clothes extra love with an additional wash and rinse—perfect for getting rid of any extra soap. It’s the smarter, more efficient way to tackle tough stains!
Bubbles Aren't Always Bad
Peeking through the washer window and seeing some bubbles during the spin cycle? Don’t freak out! A few clear bubbles are totally normal and no big deal. But if you spot a ton of thick, white suds, that’s a sign there’s too much soap. In that case, grab an attendant and ask for an “extra rinse.” Or, better yet, plan ahead and select the extra rinse option when you start the load.
The moral of the story? Use the right detergent amount, choose the right cycle, and don’t let bubbles get the best of you. You’ll save time, money, and your sanity—all while keeping your laundry fresh and clean.
