Halloween Costume Heaven
by Marissa Zumbo, October 2020
Washing machines have changed a lot in the past 15 years—so have detergents.
Lions and tigers and sequined costumes, oh my!
Truth be told, most store bought costumes aren’t meant to last a lifetime. But that doesn’t mean you have to retire that Elvis suit after one use. Many costumes do just fine in high quality washing machines.
If your costume is made of polyester, nylon or acrylic, it can be machine washed on a cold setting. At Big Waves, we not only have temperature choices, but spin and soil level choices as well. It’s not a bad idea to go with a “Delicates” cycle.
And of course, for any ghost sheet or other white outfit, add a little bleach to the wash.
One of the most important things: hang dry. It’s the dryer that can often ruin specialty clothes—not the washer. So hang dry, preferable outside in the sun.
Don’t get me wrong, not all Zombie Doctor scrubs are created equal. Some costumes need to be dry cleaned or hand washed.
Pay attention to the tag.
Just because we’re socially distancing, doesn’t mean you have to forgo Halloween. Even if you’re alone in your apartment, lounge around in that Sexy Priest outfit and gorge on oversized Milky Ways.
No one’s judging.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN
