How To Properly Wash Your American Flag (And Other Flags)

by Marissa Zumbo and Kelsey Hickok, July 2024

The 4th of July has passed, and many of us proudly displayed our American flags to celebrate Independence Day. If your flag is looking a bit dirty after the festivities, it’s important to know how to clean it properly to maintain its vibrant colors and respectful appearance. At Big Waves Laundromat, we’re here to help you keep all your flags looking their best.

Step-by-Step Guide to Washing Your American Flag

  • Check the Material: Most American flags are made of nylon or polyester, but some might be cotton. The material will determine the best washing method. See note below on treatment of different types.

  • Pre-Treat Stains: If there are noticeable stains, pre-treat them with a mild detergent. Gently rub the detergent into the stain with a soft cloth.

  • Use Cold Water: Always wash your flag in cold water. Hot water can cause the colors to bleed, especially the red dye.

  • Gentle Cycle: Place your flag in a washing machine on a gentle cycle. Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach, which can damage the fabric and colors.

  • Hand Wash for Delicate Flags: If your flag is old or particularly delicate, consider hand washing. Fill a tub with cold water and mild detergent, gently swish the flag around, and rinse thoroughly.

  • Drying the Flag: Do not wring out your flag. Instead, lay it flat on a clean, dry towel and roll it up to remove excess water. Then, hang the flag to air dry. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade the colors.

  • Ironing: If necessary, you can iron your flag on the lowest heat setting. Use a pressing cloth between the iron and the flag to avoid direct heat.

Washing Other Types of Flags

  • The process for washing other flags, such as state flags, international flags, or custom banners, is similar:

  • Material Check: Always start by checking the material of the flag. This will guide your washing method.

  • Color Safety: Be cautious of colors running, especially with flags that have multiple bold colors.

  • Washing Method: Use cold water and a gentle cycle for machine washing, or hand wash for more delicate items.

  • Drying: Always air dry your flags to maintain their shape and colors.

Additional Tips

  • Regular Maintenance: Regularly dusting and spot-cleaning your flags can extend the time between washes.

  • Proper Storage: Store your flags in a cool, dry place to prevent mold and mildew. Avoid folding them in a way that creates permanent creases.

  • Flag Respect: If your flag becomes too worn or damaged, it’s time to retire it properly. Many communities offer flag retirement services, often through local veterans’ organizations.

A Quick Note on Treating Different Materials

Always refer to the care label first, but as a general rule: for nylon, polyester, or other synthetic materials, wash the flag in a washing machine on a delicate cycle with cold water and mild detergent. For cotton, wool, or other natural materials, it's best to hand wash these delicate flags.
