Washing Jeans and Denim

by Marissa Zumbo, February 2023

Most Americans have at least one denim item in their wardrobe (probably a lot more). While it’s a durable fabric, it’s important to treat it well so it stays durable. Unless they’re heavily soiled you can wear jeans a few times in between washing. Follow these steps when it’s time to clean those jeans!

As usual, before you wash, make sure to double check the care label as some denim items might need a different kind of care.

  • Inside Out: Turn your jeans (and other denim items) inside out. Empty all pockets and then close all zippers. Try to wash denim products separately from others. If you can’t, at least launder them with similar colors.

  • Be Gentle: Choose a delicate or gentle cycle and use cold water to avoid shrinkage and fading. Add a small amount of a mild, sensitive, or free & clear detergent. Move forward with the wash.

  • No Heat: Heavy heat can cause your jeans to shrink, fade, or even stretch (if the denim is made with spandex or Lycra). It’s best to hang up jeans and denim to air dry, but if you want to use a dryer, opt for a low or no heat cycle. It’s still best to pull them out while damp and finish air drying.

Denim Care Steps:

  • Don’t use any bleach products on denim, not even white denim, as it will cause the denim to yellow.

  • Likewise, skip the fabric softener.

  • Don’t wash too many denim items in the same load as denim is heavy and can hold a lot of water.

Some other quick tips:

There you go! Now you’re ready to pull out all your denim on denim looks.
