Washing Your Rug?

WE'VE GOT YOU COVERED

Area rugs are an excellent addition to your home. They look great and provide warmth to any room (and your bare feet). But they also get dirty, even in the cleanest of homes. So, what’s the best way to clean these large, often cumbersome rugs?

Most people automatically turn to professional rug cleaning services, who won’t even look at your rug for under $100.

An often overlooked alternative, is to machine wash the rug yourself. The GIANT washing machines at Big Waves Laundromat make this possible for you - and for under $10!

How to Wash Your Area Rug At Big Waves Laundromat

1. Make sure your rug will fit in one of our machines. Some rugs are just too big for any washer. Measure the length and width of your rug. Multiply those two numbers. If the area of your rug is:

< 64 feet: No problem, it’ll fit into one of our industrial washers

Between 64-81 feet: Possible, but tricky

> 81 feet: Probably no chance, unless the rug is thin

2. At home, vacuum or shake out excess dirt from the rug. If shaking the rug, best to take it outside--and you might need 2 people.

3. Fold the rug as symmetrically as possible with the fluffy side (show side) facing outward.

4. At Big Waves Laundromat, find the largest washing machines--probably the 8 load machines--and place your rug inside.

5. Wash on cold and delicate, using a little less detergent than normal.

6. Hang dry outdoors when possible, or over a shower curtain rod at home.

There are fancier rugs that might not be suited for machine washing, as it can cause some stretching and/or could take time for the rug to settle as it did prior to the wash. Use caution when deciding how to treat your rug. But should you decide machine washing is your best option, a super helpful Big Waves Laundromat employee on duty will be ready to assist you with washing your carpet.
